With two pillars to your own health-related scavenger hunt
Nebolus is an innovative cross-thematic and cross-setting intervention platform for the low-threshold promotion of health literacy. Nebolus consists of an online planning tool that you can use to creatively design health-related scavenger hunts and a mobile app that people of different age groups can use to explore your scavenger hunt.

The Nebolus planning tool
Create your own health scavenger hunt in just a few steps.
Every setting is unique. Contrary to “one-size-fits-all” interventions, Nebolus aims to ensure that health promotion and prevention measures are geared towards the specific needs of the setting. Nebolus is therefore designed for stakeholders in the health, education and social sectors. You can create your own Nebolus scavenger hunts using our browser-based planning tool. No special technical knowledge is required for this – all that counts is your creativity and a little planning. A gamified intervention requires an overarching story. Should it be a crime story or a science fiction story? You decide! Add all the necessary information such as texts and voice messages to the planning tool and define a duration for your Nebolus scavenger hunt. You can also create stations (e.g. local health-related services to be visited in your city/disctrict/setting) and define the sequence in your scavenger hunt. We support you in your planning with manuals, our help center and our YouTube channel with explanatory videos, among other things.

The Nebolus app
Discover Nebolus scavenger hunts
Once you have created your scavenger hunt in the planning tool, your target group can discover it mobile with the Nebolus app. A code is generated for each Nebolus scavenger hunts, which you can pass on to your target group as part of the implementation (e.g. school project weeks, first semester weeks at universities, community event). The app is structured in the form of a story-oriented location-based game, i.e. the focus is on a map of the respective location and the stations to be completed. Nebolus is designed as a group activity and can therefore be completed by small teams. Our Nebolus app runs on Android and iOS smartphones and can be downloaded free of charge from Google Play and the App Store. The Nebolus app was developed in accordance with the principle of data economy, i.e. no data is collected that can be assigned to a specific person.
Health literacy with gamification
Playing to improve health – no contradiction
We are convinced that promoting and maintaining health (skills) can be fun. That’s why, when developing Nebolus, we used various game mechanics that are used in classic analogue and computer games. Nebolus is based on a story frame that is told from the point of view of a protagonist and a hint-giving person (e.g. a friend) in the form of voice messages. This is intended to enable an immersive experience in the Nebolus scavenger hunt. Stations have the function of levels, the completion of which can unlock various achievements (badges). To increase motivation and stimulate the spirit of adventure, there are also hidden stations to discover where important side information can be found. Nebolus is not about speed, but about playfully exploring the local surrounding.

Our story templates for a captivating experience
Ready to use and customizable to your needs
In order to create the best possible gaming experience for participants, Nebolus scavenger hunts are based on a fictional story framework with virtual characters. These address various low-threshold health topics. A story manual is available to help you develop your own story. However, you can also use our story pool and adapt it to your own needs. We currently offer seven story templates covering the topics of mental health, physical activity and fitness, nutrition and alcohol consumption. Click on the titles below for more information.
